Entrepreneurship Development Centre (EDC)

The Polytechnic is geared towards producing graduates that can stand on their own without queuing for the unavailable jobs in the labor market. The Entrepreneurship Study Centre shall organize training for skills acquisition in various crafts that promote self-employment, e.g. vegetable oil and salt extraction and processing, bakery, fisheries, productive farming, animal husbandry (poultry, goat-raising, etc.), Bricklaying, Leather work and carpentry. Courses on new venture creation, innovation, and possible business opportunities shall also be organized by the Centre. The Centre shall also be responsible for the teaching of the compulsory courses under Entrepreneurship as required of students before their graduation. The Centre is headed by a Director or Coordinator appointed by the Rector.

One major issue facing low and middle income countries is the design of poverty-reducing reforms is how to promote employment and support such employment creation through the formation appropriate skills. In Nigeria, the Polytechnics are given the mandate of producing skilled technicians and technologists for the formal sector. They are also supposed to promote life-long learning process through flexible curricula that will meet new and emerging challenges. Most Polytechnics address these challenges through the establishment of EDC.

The overarching objective of the EDC is to capacitate the polytechnics to provide 21st Century skills to youth that will enhance their job prospects and reduce unemployment.

Structure of the Centre

The choice of any particular centre is formed by the orientation of the drivers of the centre or the functionality of the approach. The Centre may be headed by a Director or Manager, who will be reporting directly to the polytechnic Rector/CEO.

The Programme or trades Coordinator will be under direct supervision of the Centre Director or Manager. The programme or trade coordinator role will be similar to that of HOD in conventional department. He should be versatile in the trade areas that are intended to be ran by the centre, with relevant qualifications and experiences. Other staff is:

  1. Programme facilitator/instructor a specialist with relevant experience.
  2. Tutor
  3. Artisan, Craftsman and Technician
  4. Administrative support staff
  5. Business and Marketing coordinator
  6. Students/Trainees
